Background
The European Commission Recommendation (EU) 2019/243 1 on the European Electronic Health Record exchange Format (EEHRxF) proposed a process for interoperability specifications to support the European Health Data Space (EHDS) and its goal of creating a secure and trusted environment for health data access and exchange across the EU. This recommendation also seeks to empower individuals to control their health data, support healthcare delivery and foster research and innovation.1 In support of this recommendation the European Commission has funded research projects with the aim of supporting, developing and refining the EEHRxF.

The xShare 2 project
The xShare 2 project, funded by a three-year Horizon project, supports the EEHRxF by focusing on making healthcare data accessible to all EU citizens and residents and is building a European standards and policy hub to house emerging standards, specifications and requirements. The xShare project intends to do this by developing a “yellow Button” application that can be downloaded on mobile devices and readily used. This will allow citizens to seamless share their health data with health care providers regardless of where they are in the European Union.
To realize this vision xShare will:
• Demonstrate the xSHARE button across the continuity of care, clinical research and population health.
• Build a sustainable the European EHRxF standards and policy hub.
• Facilitate the movement of digital health services across Europe and globally through the use of standards.
